At RDM, we get really excited when life-changing tech innovations emerge. While everyone is still waiting for flying cars, today we are celebrating amazing technological innovations that are designed for people living with disabilities. These cool gadgets present an opportunity to enhance the lives and experience for individuals overcoming physical disabilities by making everyday obstacles a little easier.

Customized Mobility

IntelliWheels is a wheelchair innovation startup from Urbana-Champaign. This company originally produced FitGrips which are ergonomic hand-rim grips that create a more comfortable experience for wheelchair users. Now they’ve launched Tinkera custom wheelchair building platform. Tinker gives customers feedback and control as they play with the 3D product rendering to customize their individual wheelchair design, such as measurements and colors. View the Tinker demo!

Communication Enhancements

Uber continues to grow not only worldwide but also in its commitment to helping others by hiring deaf and mute drivers. How is this possible? Uber has partnered with the ASL to develop video guides in sign language to create an easier driving experience. They have also incorporated accessible technology directly into their app. When users identify as deaf or hard of hearing, the app enable the drivers to use features such as flashing trip requests, text-only communication with the riders, and notifying the rider that their driver is deaf or hard of hearing.
